Library of South China Normal UniversityLibrary of South China Normal University (LSCNU) originates in Library of Normal College of Rang Qin University (NCRQU). August 1, 1933 saw the establishment of NCRQU, followed by its Library. Through a series of unusual events as well as site and name alterations, Library of NCRQU changed her name in 1939 after her university into Library of Guangdong Arts and Science College. By the time of the founding of P.R. China, she had a collection of more than 100,000 books. In 1951, Library of NCRQU, together with the collection of books and related equipment from former Normal College of Sun Yat-sen University and Education Department of South China Union University, turned herself into Library of South China Normal College (LSCNC). In 1952, with Department of Education of Lingnan University, Department of Education of Guangxi University, Department of Geography of Hunan University, some Departments of Arts of Nanchang University, and Nanhai Normal School as its incorporated units, LSCNC enlarged its collection of books from these units. In October, 1982, following SCNC renamed as SCNU, LSCNC was renamed LSCNU. Over 70 years, LSCNU has been developing along with the educational cause of our country. At the time of the founding of P.R. China, she had a mere area of 3800 square meters. In 1980, she expanded her area to 8356 square meters, offering 900 reading seats to her readers. Ever since the day when SCNU entered into ‘Project 211' in the 90s, great importance has been attached to her construction. November, 1998 witnessed her standing in a different position a brand-new herself, accepting readers, with a usable area of 23,500 square meters and over 1700 reading seats. Up to 2001, she has enjoyed a total collection of more than 400,000 kinds of books or 1,863,000 books and items, 1,636,000 of which are in Chinese, 224,000 in foreign languages and more than 3000 tapes and video tapes. She has purchased Chinese electronic books, Chinese and foreign electronic journals data base and over twenty specialty data bases. She has set up her own data base for a catalogue of LSCNU Chinese and foreign books and journals, SCNU M.A.(S.)/PhD. Theses data base, teaching reference books data base, SCNU experts data base, educational information data base, Education and Developmental Psychology data base. All this has made her characteristic of being comprehensive in her variety of books, normal and local in nature, and rich in ancient books, with paper, electronic and other kinds of literature. She now employs Weiwen Library Management System to the effect that her affairs are accomplished through intranet management. In October, 2002, electronic resources center was put to use, offering 250 computers to readers for network resources. To implement Library Regulations for Colleges and Universities better and to realize the purpose of ‘Readers First, Offer Services and Education', she maximizes her opening time to readers, actively involves herself in various multi-layered services such as reading consultation, literature information and topic search services, on-line inter-library borrowing, literature transmission, on-line booking and renewal, on-line electronic announcements, electronic forum, internet information and resources navigation. LSCNU is now developing into a modern electronic, networking and highly civilized library! |
